What is
Project
Graduation?
In 1979, the Oxford Hills community in Maine suffered the heartbreaking loss of seven teenagers to drug- or alcohol-related accidents. In response, the community came together in 1980 to create a safer celebration for graduating seniors—a supervised party designed to offer a fun, alcohol-free alternative to the dangers of drinking and driving. The initiative was a resounding success, and by 1986, Project Graduation parties were being held in all 50 states.
Traditionally organized by parent volunteers with the support of the local community members, and businesses sponsors, Project Grad aims to make the celebration more appealing than unsupervised parties.
To fund the event, volunteers host a variety of fun and engaging activities throughout the year, including raffles, bake sales, bingo nights, and hockey games. Corporate sponsors also play a crucial role by contributing resources and funding, ensuring the event is a memorable and safe experience for all involved. On the night of the event, students typically leave the party the next morning with a pocketful of prizes, a full stomach, and big smiles.
Congratulations to all of our Scarborough graduates! Enjoy celebrating your accomplishments—safely and responsibly!
